Brits Investing in Portugal
So, You’re a Brit Thinking About Portugal?
There’s a moment many of us arrive at — sometimes over a glass of red in the UK drizzle, or perhaps after too many headlines and not enough sun. It’s that flicker of possibility:
Could I actually live in Portugal?
It might start with buying a holiday home, or thinking about future income from rentals. But soon, the real question arises — how do I legally live here now that the UK is out of the EU? What are the visa option for British expats?
And while Portugal is beautifully open-hearted, the paperwork isn’t exactly poetic. So let’s untangle it, softly and clearly.
This guide is for the British buyers, the lifestyle investors, the ones craving roots and rhythm — not just a getaway.
The Most Common Ways Brits Gain Residency in Portugal
Here’s how it usually happens — in real life, with real people.
1. The "Passive Income" Path — D7 Visa
You’re retired, semi-retired, or have rental income from the UK. You might already own a home here. You just want space, sun, and a sense of belonging.
This visa is beautifully designed for you.
You’ll need to show:
Around €820/month in stable passive income (pensions, UK rent, dividends)
A Portuguese address (owned or rented)
Private health insurance and a clean criminal record
A willingness to stay in Portugal at least 6 months a year
It’s calm, reliable, and often the least complicated route.
2. The "Work From Anywhere" Path — D8 Visa
You work online. You're a graphic designer, coach, writer, IT specialist, or consultant. Your clients are in the UK, but your soul wants Portugal.
This one’s for you.
You’ll need to show:
At least €3,280/month in remote income
A Portuguese address, plus basic private healthcare
Documents proving contracts or steady clients
Once approved, you can live and work from your peaceful hilltop home, legally.
3. The "Business & Creative Project" Path — D2 Visa
Maybe you want to open a guesthouse, run retreats, or start a boutique food brand with local olive oil. If your idea is viable and contributes to the local economy, Portugal is listening.
You’ll need:
A business plan with roots
Startup capital
A basic understanding of the Portuguese system (which I can help with)
It’s less talked about, but for heart-led entrepreneurs, it’s golden.
4. The Family Connection
If your spouse, child, or partner already lives in Portugal legally — or if you're married to an EU citizen — your route may be faster and lighter.
Think of this as a bridge visa: you're not on your own here.
5. The (Now Evolved) Golden Visa
Once popular for property buyers, this visa has shifted. Residential real estate no longer qualifies in most areas. However, if you’re investing €500K in a regulated fund, or €250K in the arts or heritage projects, this might still work for you.
It's no longer about “just buying a house.” It’s about meaningful investment.
But What If You’re Not Ready to Move Yet?
This is the space I love working in.
Let’s say you’re:
Still living in the UK, with kids or work commitments
Wanting to buy property in Portugal now, while prices make sense
Thinking about moving here in 2–5 years, but unsure of the path
You're not alone. And you’re not stuck.
What I often recommend is the “Bridge Strategy.”
You buy the property now — a retreat, a rental, a future home — and I help you:
Set it up as a legal rental (short/airbnb- or long-term)
Manage bookings, maintenance, guests, and local bureaucracy
Generate income you can later show as passive income (for the D7)
Build a soft landing for future residency
This allows you to start earning in Portugal, legally and efficiently, while laying the groundwork for your future visa application.
It’s slow, grounded, and far more aligned with reality than rushing a move you’re not ready for.
So Where Do We Begin?
If you’re exploring property as a way into Portugal, it makes sense to work with someone who understands both the logistics and the lifestyle.
Here’s what I offer:

Clear income reports and systems — so you’re visa-ready when the time comes
And most importantly, care. I don’t just “manage.” I nurture places that feel alive, even when you’re far away.
Let’s Make This Real

What type of visa makes sense down the line
Whether property is your right starting place
No pressure. No jargon. Just real talk about building something soulful, sustainable, and legally sound.
