One of the most captivating things about living in Portugal is its remarkably diverse landscape. One moment, you can be on the coast with sand between your toes, gazing at endless rolling dunes. Watching the wild beaches meet the Atlantic Ocean gives you a sense of vastness — as if anything is possible and time itself slows down.

I’m often called to the ocean, especially under the light of the full moon, to watch gigantic waves crash ashore or to let the salty air blow away life’s troubles.

Less than two hours inland, you can find yourself in the Serra da Estrela — the Valley of the Stars — breathing in crisp mountain air among Portugal’s highest peaks. The sheer beauty of the landscape here feels luxurious and grand. Portugal is loved by both locals and visitors for its pristine, life-giving waters.

For me, the mountains are home. I’ve laid my foundations here, where fresh spring water flows straight from the source to my faucet, where I can shower under waterfalls and forage in lush forests. It’s a place where farmers and artisans have found their peace — and where property in Central Portugal can still be bought at surprisingly reasonable prices.

The population in this region is slowly growing, bringing with it skilled tradespeople, vibrant markets, multicultural cuisine, and a wealth of naturopathic healthcare options. Holistic therapies, retreats, and workshops are drawing more visitors every year, boosting the local economy.

Since I arrived over seven years ago, major investments have been made in road infrastructure and the local praias fluviais (river beaches), making them even more inviting for both residents and tourists.
